WHAT IS DUNGEONS & DRAGONS?
Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop RPG that takes place in a host of unique worlds created by your and your friends’ vivid imaginations. The game was first published in 1974 and since then, it’s been a space where a party of adventurers could come together to explore, engage in combat, and help their imaginary alter-egos grow. Think of it like a combination of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter that you and your friends can actively participate in.
COMMENT ÇA MARCHE OU COMMENT COMMENCER
To start your D&D journey, you firstly need a Dungeon Master (DM), who is essentially the narrator of the game. The DM describes the setting, presents challenges and scenarios, and interprets the game rules.
As a player, you’ll create a character to represent you in the game world. Start by choosing your character’s race (e.g., human, elf, dwarf) and class (e.g., warrior, rogue, wizard). Then, you’ll roll dice (mainly a 20-sided dice, also known as a D20) to define your character’s abilities and resolve actions during the game.
The game proceeds in a cycle of the Dungeon Master narrating the scenario, then you and your fellow adventurers making decisions and describing the actions of your characters. Then, based on your decisions, the DM will determine the outcomes.
CE QU'IL FAUT POUR JOUER
Basically, to play D&D you need the Player’s Handbook, a set of polyhedral dice, character sheets, and a pencil. A Dungeon Master also needs the Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual to lead the game. If you are interested in painting miniatures that represent your characters, optionally you might pick up some painting supplies.
Also, there are basic rules available online for free, if you want to get a feel for the game before making a purchase.
CONSEILS POUR LES GRANDS DÉBUTANTS
1. ENGAGE WITH YOUR CHARACTER: Really immerse yourself in your character’s role. This not only improves the game experience, but it also makes decision-making easier.
2. DON’T FEAR FAILURE: The best stories usually come from unexpected results. A failure can lead to even more enjoyable moments.
3. RESPECT YOUR DM: Remember, your Dungeon Master is the link to the game world. They put in lots of time preparing the adventure, and they should be treated with respect.
4. BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR ACTIONS: Be as specific as possible about what your character is doing. For instance, don’t just announce “I attack”, instead add some flair: “I charge at the Goblin, swinging my sword!”
5. HAVE FUN: This is a game. Don’t worry too much about making the optimal choice. The goal of D&D is to have fun with your friends.
