Combat Patrol Grey Knights Review: Box Contents, Playstyle & Value Guide

What Is Combat Patrol: Grey Knights (Crowe's Sanctifiers)?

Combat Patrol: Grey Knights — officially named Crowe's Sanctifiers, led by Castellan Crowe — is Games Workshop's entry-level box for the most elite daemon-hunting Space Marines in Warhammer 40,000. Priced at £105, it gives you 17 miniatures. Every Grey Knight is a psyker, making this one of the most psychically-active factions in the game.

Box Contents: What Do You Get?

  • 1x Castellan Crowe — a named character warlord, bearer of the Black Blade of Antwyr
  • 10x Strike Squad (buildable as Interceptors, Purifiers, or Purgation Squad) — standard Grey Knights infantry
  • 5x Brotherhood Terminators (buildable as Paladin Squad) — elite Terminator-armoured Grey Knights
  • 1x Venerable Dreadnought — a powerful walker with heavy weapon options

Playstyle: How Do Grey Knights Play?

Grey Knights are a small, elite army combining powerful psychic abilities with exceptional melee combat. Every model is a psyker with a nemesis force weapon. Key traits:

  • Psychic Phase: Grey Knights generate enormous psychic output. Smite, Hammerhand, and other powers significantly boost combat effectiveness.
  • Nemesis Force Weapons: Psychic melee weapons carried by all Grey Knights, dangerous against any target — especially Daemons.
  • Castellan Crowe: A powerful combat character ideal for hunting enemy characters or carving through elite squads.
  • Brotherhood Terminators/Paladins: Slow but resilient — excellent at holding objectives under fire.
  • Venerable Dreadnought: Fire support and melee threat that protects your infantry from armoured enemies.

Grey Knights suffer from low model counts — every loss hurts. Psychic management and positioning are essential skills.

Value: Is the Grey Knights Combat Patrol Worth It?

At £105 for 17 miniatures including a named character, Terminators, and a Dreadnought, this box is excellent value. Build flexibility (Strike Squad into four unit types, Terminators into Paladins) gives options as your army grows.

Recommended Paints for Grey Knights

  • Leadbelcher or Boltgun Metal spray for the silver armour base
  • Nuln Oil wash for depth and shadow
  • Ironbreaker highlight for raised edges
  • Retributor Armour or Balthasar Gold for ornamental detail
  • Blue for psychic effects: Thunderhawk Blue, Fenrisian Grey

Growing Your Grey Knights Army

From Crowe's Sanctifiers, expand with a Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight (the iconic Grey Knights walker), more Strike Squads, or Interceptors for fast objective play. Grey Knights pair well with small allied Inquisition detachments.
