Combat Patrol Kroot Review: Box Contents, Playstyle & Value Guide

What Is Combat Patrol: Kroot (T'au Empire)?

Combat Patrol: Kroot is a limited-run Games Workshop box for the Kroot, the alien mercenary auxiliaries of the T'au Empire in Warhammer 40,000. Priced at £105, it gives you 17 miniatures. Important: this box is listed as 'available while stocks last' on the GW website — it may not be reprinted. If you want it, act sooner rather than later.

Box Contents: What Do You Get?

  • 1x Kroot Lone-spear — a lone predator character, a sniper-style Kroot hunter
  • 1x Krootox Rider — a Kroot riding a large Krootox beast with heavy gun support
  • 3x Krootox Rampagers — large beast-riders for fast, hard-hitting melee charges
  • 12x Farstalker Kinband warriors — the core Kroot infantry, expert hunters and skirmishers

Playstyle: How Do Kroot Play?

Kroot function as the T'au Empire's melee and flanking specialists, filling a role that T'au firepower-focused units cannot. Key traits:

  • Hunters in the Dark: Kroot excel in terrain-heavy environments, using stealth and cover to approach enemies before striking.
  • Kroot Lone-spear: A mobile hunter character ideal for hunting isolated targets or harassing backline units.
  • Krootox Rampagers: Fast, aggressive melee cavalry — use them to charge into flanks or tie up shooty enemies.
  • Farstalker Kinband: Infiltrating skirmish infantry. Excellent at screening, objective play, and threatening unexpected angles.
  • Krootox Rider: Provides heavy gun support that Kroot infantry lack, giving the patrol some ranged punch.

Kroot reward aggressive, opportunistic play. Use their speed and terrain mastery to get into melee where T'au's long-range advantage counts for nothing.

Value: Is the Kroot Combat Patrol Worth It?

At £105, good value given that these are all newer Kroot sculpts released as part of a major range refresh. The limited availability makes it worth buying if you have any interest in the faction.

Recommended Paints for Kroot

  • Gryph-hound Orange contrast or Skrag Brown base for the skin tone
  • Agrax Earthshade wash
  • Tau Light Ochre or Tallarn Sand highlights
  • Waaagh! Flesh or Castellan Green for equipment and armour
  • Leather browns for straps and organic details: Rhinox Hide, Doombull Brown

Growing Your Kroot Army

Kroot can run as a standalone patrol within the T'au Empire faction or integrate into a larger T'au army. Additional Farstalker Kinband boxes add skirmish depth. Pair the Kroot with T'au Fire Warriors and Battlesuits for a combined-arms force.
