This is a review of the Start Collecting Fyreslayers box: your “army in a box” solution to start collecting angry naked dwarves.

Which models are included in the Start Collecting Fyreslayers Box?
This advertises the following miniatures on the box:
- 1 Auric Runefather on Magmadroth
- 1 Auric Runesmiter
- 1 Auric Runeson
- 10 Vulkite Berzerkers
1 Auric Runefather on Magmadroth

The Magmadroth model, aside from being an outstanding model, can be assembled with different riders. Runefather, Runeson and Runesmiter can all mount the lava beast, allowing the other 2 heroes to be assembled on foot.
In a single box you then have more than 50% of your hero options with Runefather on Magmadroth being the recommended starting one.
However, with a bit of experience, the other riders could be swapped/magnetized.
Independently from the rider, the Magmadroth is a veritable force of nature, extremely powerful against hordes with a 12” missile attack, lashing tail doing extra damage at the end of the combat phase and mortal wounds on a 4+ for any damage suffered in melee.
The Runefather is not to be underestimated in melee either, with 3 attacks at 3+/3+, -1 rend and 3 damage!
The mounted version has a command ability that makes all units wholly within 18” immune to battleshock tests, while the on foot version adds +1 charge to all units wholly within 12”.
Either one is a must-have in probably most of your lists. A sweet powerhouse for your force!
1 Auric Runesmiter and 1 Auric Runeson

The Runeson performs at its best when coupled with another Runeson, allowing each other to re-roll hit rolls while within 6”.
When on a Magmadroth he can unleash a potential D6 damage on a charge using a command point. But on foot he can still add +1 to wound rolls to all units wholly within 12”.
He can be assembled with a Javelin for some missile damage, or with the axe for more melee focus.
The Runesmiter is one of your priest options allowing to summon the Magmic Invocations (the equivalent of endless spells) and perform many other useful prayers.
Outside of all powerful artefacts and prayers he can be equipped with from the book, the Runesmiter default prayer allows him to re-roll wound rolls of all units within 12” or within 18” if using a forge key instead of the icon.
On foot can use his tunnel ability to avoid initial deployment but appear anywhere 9” away from an enemy with an accompanying unit before the end of the 3rd movement phase.
On the Magmadroth he can instead, once per battle add, +1 save to all units wholly within 12”.
Runefather and Runesmiter are probably your omnipresent heroes together with the Battlesmith, so which options, mounted or not, to take will depend on your type of army keeping an eye also on your lodge abilities.
All Leaders on Magmadroth are also Behemoths.
10 Vulkite Berzerkers

The Vulkite Berzerkers are your default battleline independently from who is your general.
They have 3 weapon loadouts: axe and shield, warpick and shield or two axes.
The shield allows them to dish mortal wounds on a charge and add +1 save in melee when they haven’t charged.
The pair of axes can re-roll hit rolls while the main difference between a single axe and a warpick is -1 rend of the warpick but 5+ to wound instead of no rend but 4+ to wound.
Which loadout to use will eventually depend on your synergies with the other heroes, for example a Runeson on foot can give +1 to wound or a Runesmiter pray can allow re-roll all failed wound rolls, etc.
The Vulkite Berzerkers are a must-have for all Fyreslayers army, so great to get some in the starter box.
Total point cost and point cost of the different models in the Fyreslayers Start Collecting Box
Using the points from the last battletome:
- a Runefather is 100 points on foot and 280 on a Magmadroth
- a Runeson is 100 on foot and 240 on a Magmadroth
- a Runesmiter is 120 on foot and 260 on a Magmadroth
- 10 Vulkite Berzerkers are a battleline of 160 points.
If you assemble it as pictured on the box with the Runefater on the big beast, you will get a total of 660 points.
Note: this article was made prior to the December 2019 points update, so some points could have changed there.

Value of the Fyreslayers Box
The sum of all models as purchased directly from the GW store is 95£ for a discount of 37%, really good considering this box is all you need to create an army of Fyreslayers.
The on-foot options are however not available individually but only within a Magmadroth box.
Overall verdict on the Fyreslayers Start Collecting Box
If you want to start a Fyreslayer army, look no further: this is the box you need.
And you will need more than one to benefit for all those hero options available.
It also gives immediately a battleline option until you figure out which general you want to use. All of that with a nice 37% discount.
After that, add a Battlesmith and evaluate the different lodges and battalions and see if you want more Vulkites or start some Hearthguards.
Can’t recommend this box enough if fire dwarves are your jam.
