Age of Sigmar 4th Edition — What Changed

Age of Sigmar 4th Edition launched in June 2024 and is the current ruleset. If you played AoS before and took a break, here is what is new:

  • Spearhead format: A new streamlined entry format using a fixed 25-model force per faction. No army building required — each faction has a set Spearhead box that contains everything you need to play. This is now the recommended starting point for new players.
  • Free core rules: The full core rules are available as a free PDF download from the GW website. You do not need to buy the core book to start playing — the Spearhead rules are included in the box.
  • Manifestation Lore: Magic has been redesigned. Wizards now summon Manifestations — physical spell entities that appear on the battlefield and can be attacked and destroyed. Each grand alliance has its own Manifestation Lore.
  • Army construction: Regiment of Renown and Galletian Champion rules from 3rd Edition are replaced with a simpler Regiments system. Army building is faster and less restrictive than before.
  • Points and balance: GW updates points quarterly via the free Matched Play Guide PDF. Always download the latest version before a matched play game — printed points in battletomes go out of date quickly.

Spearhead — The Best Way to Start AoS in 2025

Spearhead is the fastest, cheapest route into Age of Sigmar. Each faction has a dedicated Spearhead box containing a fixed set of models, a reference card, and all the rules you need to play. Two players with two different Spearhead boxes can play a full game immediately — no additional purchases required.

Spearhead games play in roughly 45–60 minutes, making them ideal for club nights or casual evenings. The format is also the entry point GW uses for organised play events, so learning Spearhead means your skills transfer directly to competitive play.

Which Spearhead box should I buy?

The best Spearhead box is the one for the faction you find most visually interesting — you will be painting these models, so pick something you actually want to look at. If you are completely undecided, Stormcast Eternals and Soulblight Gravelords are both excellent starter factions with strong community support and plenty of painting guides online.

New in Early 2026

GW’s 2026 AoS release schedule continues the pattern established in 4th Edition — rolling faction waves with accompanying Spearhead boxes, battletome updates, and terrain releases. Check the Sitio de la Comunidad Warhammer for the latest announcements as they happen.

Major 2025 Releases

  • Soulblight Gravelords — Deathrattle wave: New skeleton and zombie plastic kits, expanding the undead range significantly. One of the most-requested refreshes in AoS history.
  • Blades of the Hollow King: A narrative campaign supplement introducing new story content and matched play content for several factions.
  • Continued Spearhead releases: GW steadily added Spearhead boxes for remaining factions throughout 2025. Most major factions now have a dedicated Spearhead set.
  • Event miniatures: GW’s annual event-exclusive miniatures continued with new sculpts available at major Warhammer events and online during limited windows.

The AoS 4th Edition Launch Box (2024)

The 4th Edition launch box shipped in June 2024 with Stormcast Eternals versus Skaven — a new range of models for both factions, plus the core rulebook and all the game materials needed to play. The launch box sold out quickly and the contents were later released separately. If you missed it, the individual faction boxes and core book are available through independent retailers.

Where to Buy Age of Sigmar Models

GW models are available direct from the Games Workshop website and through independent retailers. Independent retailers in most countries sell at 10–20% below GW’s retail price — worth checking before buying directly. Amazon carries a solid range of GW products, particularly starter sets and paint sets, often at competitive prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Age of Sigmar 4th Edition worth starting in 2025?

Yes — 4th Edition is well-supported, actively updated, and has the most accessible entry format AoS has ever had. The Spearhead format means you can start for the price of a single box. The free core rules lower the barrier further. If you have been considering starting, now is a good time.

How often does GW release new AoS models?

GW releases new AoS content roughly every 2–4 weeks. Major faction waves (new battletome + models) happen a few times per year. Between waves there are terrain kits, event miniatures, paint sets, and campaign supplements. The Warhammer Community site posts upcoming release previews every Saturday.

Where can I see AoS upcoming releases before they launch?

GW announces releases via Warhammer Community articles, usually 1–2 weeks before the preorder date. Following the official Warhammer Facebook page or the Warhammer Community newsletter is the fastest way to get announcements. The AoS subreddit (r/ageofsigmar) also collects and discusses previews as they are released.

Do old AoS models still work in 4th Edition?

Yes — GW maintains warscrolls (unit rules) for all current range models in 4th Edition. Models from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Edition are all legal and fully playable. The main limitation is that some older factions have been consolidated or squatted — check the current AoS faction range on the GW site to confirm your army is still supported.
